Zooming Out

If you want to get a broader view of an area, zoom out to increase the scale The map scale shows the magnification of the map, showing the relative size. The lower the number, the more detailed and "zoomed-in".

In this section you practice zooming out, and  zooming to the full extent of the map.

Try it out!

 Fixed Zoom Out

  1. Open a map in the main window and select a few layers from the Layers Tab.
  2. Select Zoom Out from the Main Toolbar.

  3. Click in the map to zoom out a fixed amount.

Zoom out with a box

  1. Select Zoom Out from the  Main Toolbar.

  2. With the mouse, draw a (blue) box around an area. The smaller the box, the greater the zoom.

  1. Release the mouse button. The scale increases. Because of the large amount of data, this may take some time.

  2. Try zooming with different sized boxes.

  3. Check the Scale box after each zoom to see the difference.

  4. Check the position in the Overview Map.

 Full Extent

 Use Full Extent on the Main Toolbar to zoom out so that the entire map is visible in the main window. You will not be able to see all the detail at this level, but you can use it to start over somewhere else, keeping the same layers.
