Task 7: Annotating and Printing Maps

Create special purpose maps, which you either can print or save as PDF, using the Drawing Control on the Advanced Toolbar and the Print tool on the Main Toolbar.  

Using tools from Drawing Control , you can annotate the current map in the main window.

Then use the Print tool on the Main Toolbar to print the map in the main window, including all the annotations you added, as well as a legend and title text. You can also print them as PDF files or email the map to others.

Try it out!

Change the settings in My Profile

  1. Click the Show Advanced Toolbar tool and then the My Profile tool.

  2. Select Print directly from Print Preview and then Save My Profile.    

Prepare the map view you want to print

  1. Activate the layers for the map on the Layers Tab.

  2. Use Zoom and Pan until the area you want to print is visible inside the main window.

Annotate the map with circles, lines and comments

Use the Drawing Control on the Advanced Toolbar to annotate the map.

Note: See Drawing Control in the Reference section for more details about drawing.

  1. Choose Color and Width of the annotations first.

  2. Try out the different drawing tools, like Draw Point , Draw Line , and Draw Box .

  3. Click the Draw Text tool and then the location you want text on the map. Enter the text in the text prompt that appears at the top of the screen.

  4. Create a private Bookmark from the Advanced Toolbar to save the annotated map.

  5. Practice with the annotation tools until you feel comfortable with them.

Set up the printed map

 

Note: The Preview occurs in a Pop-Up A small webpage without a top menu bar often used for advertising, but used here for certain functions. A pop-up blocker blocks the ads, but blocks these functions if the site isn't specifically allowed. window. Make sure your Pop-Up Blockers allow pop-ups from  http://www.geovieweronline.net/.

  1. Click the Print button.

  2. Check if you want to include a Legend.

  3. Enter Map Titles.

  4. Select Paper Size and  Portrait or Landscape Orientation.

  5. Select the Scale if appropriate.

Preview and Print

  1. Select  Preview to preview the map in a pop-up window.

  2. Print the map as usual from the Print Manager, which appears if you set My Profile as recommended above.

Print to PDF

  1. Select Print to PDF Portable Document Format : a file format developed by Adobe to display documents independent of the original application used to create it. PDF can be generated using XML to make an electronic version of your map that you can email or save on your computer.

  2. Select Open, if you just want to preview it, or Save in the dialogue box.

Send the map in an email
