Buffer

Use the Buffer from the Right Pane to select a group of features located within buffer A zone at a specified distance around a feature. zones around one or more map features. For example, you can select all parcels that come within 500 feet of a certain location, such as a school. You might want to do this to be able to identify possible causes for an error or to notify all residents around a new construction site.

Prepare for the buffer

  1. On the Layers tab

Note: The buffer tool needs two different  layers if you are buffering around a selected feature. To select parcels around another parcel, use a layer such as 'parcel hollow', 'address' or 'APN' as the buffered layer and 'parcels' as the target.

  1. Use the pan and zoom tools until you can clearly view the map feature(s) around which you want to create a buffer.

Create the Buffer using a Selected Feature

  1. Select the feature you want to buffer using a Select tool.

  2. On the Buffer pane click Buffer using Selected Features.

  3. Select the layer that the selected feature is in the Select Layer drop-down list.

  4. Select the layer you want in the buffer as the Target Layer.

  5. Enter the Buffer Distance.

  6. Click Apply Buffer. The buffer zone is marked with thin stripes, and the selected parcels are selected with yellow.

Create the Buffer using a Line or a Point to buffer out from.

  1. Select either Draw Line and Buffer or Draw Point and Buffer.

  2. Draw the line by clicking 2 points or click for a point.

  3. Select the Target Layer (i.e. Parcels) and enter the Buffer Distance.

  4. Click Apply Buffer. The buffer zone is indicated with thin stripes and the buffered features are selected.
